How GreenPAC works
GreenPAC is a non-partisan, non-profit organization working to elect and support environmental leaders of all major parties running for office. We have run successful endorsement campaigns in the Federal (2015), Manitoba (2016), B.C. (2017) and Ontario (2018) elections.
Why was GreenPAC created?
GreenPAC exists to address the most serious challenge the environmental sector faces: translating Canadians’ environmental concerns into political action. We tackle this challenge by channeling Canadians' broad but diffuse support for environmental progress toward the election campaigns of specific environmental champions. Our goal is to recruit, nominate, elect, and support environmental leaders across the political spectrum, from all major political parties.
How are we going to do it?
Identify - Before federal and provincial elections, we find the strongest environmental candidates running for office in all the major parties. We research candidates’ voting history, work and volunteer experience, education and awards, and role with environmental organizations, and get input from GreenPAC supporters, our extended network, the candidates themselves, and the wider public. In addition, to receive an endorsement, the candidate must also have a reasonable shot at winning.
Endorse - Our independent Expert Panel decides on a final list of endorsed candidates from across the political spectrum. Panel members are a diverse group of independent environmental specialists from across the country. For provincial elections, we add regional experts familiar with issues in their own jurisdictions.
Elect - During the campaign, we reach out far and wide to drive donations of time and money to our endorsed candidates to help them win. One of the ways we do this is by using our Candidate Matching Tool, which matches participants with the candidate that shares their specific political and environmental values. We then encourage participants to plug into their matched candidate’s campaign.
Support - After our endorsees take office, we help them deliver on their environmental commitments by helping to publicize their calls to action and sharing their achievements through our networks.
Why is this necessary?
Environmental leadership is broader than a particular government or political party and it has been too long since there has been any substantial legislative progress. It’s time to level the playing field for political candidates who have demonstrated environmental commitment. Together we can make sure there are electoral rewards for leadership on environmental issues in Canadian politics.
