Environmental Biography

Joyce Murray first joined the environmental movement as co-founder of an international reforestation company, Brinkman and Associates Reforestation Ltd. She entered provincial politics in 2000, serving as BC's first-ever Minister of Water, Land and Air Protection from 2001 to 2004. In that role, she introduced BC's first regulation making producers responsible for recycling or disposal of their products, implemented ground-water protection regulations and set the foundation for BC's five-part climate plan

Elected MP in 2008, Murray served as vice-chair of the Liberal Caucus Committee on Environmental Sustainability, introduced Bill C-606 to ban oil tankers from Canada's Pacific North Coast and lead an international conference on Climate Change, Security & Defence. As Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury Board President she championed and helped lead the development of the Centre for Greening Government. She also led consultations on reducing Marine Debris which contributed to Canada's leadership at the G7, and to the recently announced Canada-wide Strategy on Zero Plastic Waste.
